Coins from South Africa

The South African Mint first issued the Krugerrand 1967. Its name is a combination of “Kruger”, as Paul Kruger’s likeness is featured on the obverse, and “Rand”, the currency of the Common Monetary Area (South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, and Namibia.) It is one of the most popularly traded gold bullion coins. The Krugerrand weighs 1.0909 Troy ounces. It contains 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper, giving it a total of 1 Troy ounce of gold, a characteristic warm tone, and an increased resistance to scratches and dents.

The Silver Kruggerand is a bullion coin that bears the same iconic design of it’s well-known gold counterpart. The first ever Proof Silver Krugerrand was released in 2017 to celebrate the Gold Krugerrand’s 50th anniversary. The South African Mint released a 1oz Uncirculated Silver Krugerrand for the first time in 2018!
