Description
First introduced in 1982, the .999 pure silver Mexican Libertad coins are struck yearly at the oldest mint in the Americas. The obverse design is that of the Mexican coat of arms, surrounded by ten historical versions of the national seal. The original design, used for the obverse from 1982-1995, was based on the Centenario, a Mexican gold bullion coin first minted in 1921 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mexico’s independence from Spanish rule. A new design was introduced in 1996; both depict the iconic statue in the center of Mexico City, “The Angel of Independence. The statue graces the obverse, along with the twin volcanoes of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl to either side of her.
