A Guide to Military-Themed Coins

Branch-Specific Military Coins

Two military branches have been honored with their own coins. The first was the Marine Corps in 2005, celebrating its 230th anniversary. The coin’s design features the iconic image of Marines raising the flag on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Six years later, the U.S. Army was celebrated with three coins marking its founding in 1775. These coins showcase different aspects of Army life, including historical roles, modern diversity, and soldiers over time.

The Infantry was honored with its own coin in 2012. This branch, which has borne approximately three-quarters of American combat casualties, is represented on the obverse of the coin by a soldier charging into harm’s way to complete his mission.

Coins Honoring Military Leaders

The military’s effectiveness heavily depends on its leaders, who often make life-and-death decisions while inspiring confidence and calm. The first modern commemorative coin, issued in 1982, honored President George Washington, who gained prominence as a general during the Revolutionary War. The coin features Washington on horseback and marked the 250th anniversary of his birth.

Other notable leaders have also been commemorated. In 1990, a Silver Dollar honored Dwight D. Eisenhower with dual portraits reflecting his military and political careers. In 2013, Eisenhower was featured alongside General George C. Marshall on a Silver Dollar, one of three coins celebrating great military leaders that year. Generals Omar Bradley, Henry Arnold, and Douglas MacArthur were also honored with their own coins.

Special Interest Coins

Several coins pay tribute to specific groups of service members. Among the most powerful is the 2011 Medal of Honor Silver Dollar, which commemorates recipients of the military’s highest award for valor. The coin’s obverse depicts the medal, while the reverse features a soldier carrying a wounded comrade. Other notable issues include the 1994 POW coin, the 2010 Disabled Veterans coin, and the 1998 Black Patriots Silver Dollar. The 2002 West Point Silver Dollar recognizes the contributions of the nation’s premier military academy.

International Military-Themed Coins

While the U.S. Mint emphasizes military issues, it is not alone in honoring military service through coins. For example, the Royal Mint in the United Kingdom issued a Remembrance Day coin featuring the poignant inscription “SILENCE SPEAKS WHEN WORDS CAN NOT,” alongside a poppy design inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields.” Similarly, the Perth Mint and the Royal Canadian Mint have issued military-themed coins highlighting significant battles and contributions of their armed forces.

A Lasting Tribute to Service

Whether you are serving, have served, or wish to honor the sacrifices of those who have given everything for their country, military-themed coins offer meaningful ways to do so. These small but enduring tributes commemorate the valor and sacrifices of military members, ensuring their legacy continues for generations.
