Purchasing Gold and Silver in the United States from Pinehurst Coins

When you buy your preferred gold and silver bullion items from Pinehurst Coins, you may be required to pay local sales tax in certain cases. Because local tax rates are determined by the shipping address of your bullion products, there is often confusion among consumers regarding the final total. To clarify this, we’ve created an interactive directory that allows you to research the sales tax regulations in your state in advance. Please note that your sales tax is based on the destination of your bullion shipment, not necessarily your residential address. If you store your gold and silver bullion in a location other than your home state, please ensure to check the sales tax rates for that area.

Reason for Tax Collection Changes

On June 21, 2018, the Supreme Court of the United States made a decision in the case of South Dakota v. Wayfair Inc. Essentially, South Dakota argued that it was losing out on local sales taxes due to increased online shopping versus traditional in-store purchases. The 1992 case of Quill Corp v. North Dakota established a precedent for how states would handle online retailers. At that time, the court ruled in favor of Quill Corp, stating that it was not required to collect sales tax in North Dakota because it lacked a physical presence in the state.

The Supreme Court’s decision on June 21st, 2018 overturned this precedent, allowing states to enforce the collection and remittance of local sales taxes by online retailers. This requires online retailers to adapt to various sales tax rates and regulations across the country. At Pinehurst Coins, we are adjusting to these changes and striving to provide our customers with a clearer understanding of their total sales amount before completing a purchase.

We have developed an interactive tool to help you determine the type of sales tax, if any, that you will encounter.

How Pinehurst Coins is Addressing Sales Tax Changes

Pinehurst Coins is implementing specific measures to enhance your understanding of how the recent sales tax adjustments affect your acquisition of gold, silver, platinum, palladium, and copper. Primarily, we are only levying sales tax in select states. Within these states, the taxation varies based on the product type. Some states exempt bullion coins from taxation, while others impose taxes on numismatic items and related accessories such as flips, capsules, and apparel.

Here’s an illustration of some of the discrepancies:

  • For instance, Texas mandates the collection of sales tax on certain non-bullion items shipped to addresses within the state by Pinehurst Coins. This tax applies to copper and palladium products, as well as accessories like coin holders, tubes, flips, and apparel.
  • On the contrary, Vermont necessitates Pinehurst Coins to collect sales tax on all products dispatched to addresses within Vermont.

We encourage you to utilize our interactive map before making a purchase to ascertain the exact sales tax applicable to your order. Our aim is to eliminate any confusion, providing you with a clearer understanding of the expenses associated with your preferred precious metal items.
