A gladiator and military leader, Spartacus rose to prominence during the Third Servile War, a slave uprising against the Roman Republic. He skillfully commanded his forces, winning several victories against Roman legions. In 71 BCE, Spartacus and his followers were defeated in a final battle, and he perished on the battlefield. Despite his ultimate defeat, Spartacus became a symbol of resistance against tyranny and oppression, inspiring later movements for freedom and equality.
